  • Future Chef

Now that Isabel is too big to ride in the seat of the shopping cart we had to come up with something to keep her occupied at the grocery store. Last night her and I headed to Meijer. I'm pushing the cart through the produce aisle and she is following behind with my shopping list on a clip board. Her job is to find the item on the list I picked up and cross it off for me. I stopped at the display of green and red peppers. She quickly marks those off and gets preoccupied with the Jalapeno peppers. She had her head tipped back and was holding a pepper up over her mouth, telling me she would eat it whole for $1. (You have to enjoy it when a child is too young to place too much value on money.) I told her to put it down incase it was cracked or damaged and the juice got on her hand. She set it down slowly, as if the pepper would attack if it got scared.
Then she gave me a little tip. Here's what she said, "Mom, you know, if you want to make a salsa that you can actually enjoy eating without your mouth catching on fire, you have to seed the jalapeno pepper before putting it in the food processor."

"How in the world did you know that?" I asked.

"Umm, from my mentor, Paula Deen. Some day I'm going to do home cooking just like her."

I didn't know what to say, except, "I'm sure you will. Let's go find the lettuce."

  • Candy Planet

I just don't know what is going to happen with this store. We should have never moved here. Should have just stayed at the mall through Christmas, then closed completely. I try to stay optomistic and tell myself that we moved at a very slow time for retail in general (which is true) and that we can't get an accurate feel for what business is going to be like here from just September and October. It's hard though. We're just not making the money here. Being right next door to this coffee house only helps out on the weekends, and that's when we can generally hold our own anyhow. Where are all of our old customers? Why are none of them coming here to see us? There is candy we need to order, but aren't making the money to be able to do it. We've advertised in the MC paper as well as LaPorte, on, two of our local radio stations as well as a LaPorte radio station. All to no avail. We even have a website up and running. Candy Planet No one is going to it. It's sad. It wouldn't be as disappointing if our whole lives weren't vested in this place.
Hopefully we can atleast make it through our year's lease.
    We'll see.

  • Cold Weather

So, I think I've finally figured out why I like winter better than summer. I do love summer, but something is so appealing to me about the cold snowy Indiana winters. Ironically, I do not like being cold. Coming into a warm cozy home when your family is home waiting for you makes being out in the cold all worth it though. It makes the nasty weather that much sweeter. Also, as much as I don't enjoy driving in the snow and slush, I would rather have snow every single day of the winter than brown dead looking grass. I love sitting in my warm living room looking out at snow covered lawns and rooftops...
Ok. Enough...Dancing With the Stars is back on, and dinner is dinging in the kitchen.
  • This Time of Year

I must say, I'm so glad Halloween is over and done with. It seems like the "anticipation" of it lasted forever. It amazes me how many people decorate their homes for Halloween. I mean, I can understand the Pumpkins, and a few other things, but to have lights and an array of lawn decorations. My head just has a hard time wrapping itself around the hype behind this holiday. Atleast it is over now. On to happier days. Thanksgiving is fast approaching, and then Christmas.

I'm all signed up for my yearly email newsletters, like the 12 Days of Cookies from The Food Network and 100 Days of Holidays from Better Homes and Gardens. A house is really a home this time of year. Family and friends become the focus, and it is time to reflect on what is really important in life and how you can give back.

    Holidays...here I come!!
